One Of Those Perfect Fall Days
Yesterday was gray. Thunderclouds scudded the sky and drizzle spattered the ground. It was, I thought typical fall in Huron. Unpredictable, windy, rainy and overcast.
But Today! Ah yes, today. It dawned bright and fresh. You could tell right from the start it was going to be a good one.
It got even brighter when my son arrived and we had a chance to chat and exchange views on the world. We both have strong opinions so it was a lively discussion.
I had things I wanted to do…work things…fall things like piling wood. He
said…”Hey Dad, let’s go for a hike”.
I said, “But there’s so much stuff to do”.
He said, “Come on, you only live once and the exercise will do you good and besides…Max needs to run.” (Max is his dog).
So off we went across the big field and along the trail into the woods. The farther we hiked the better I felt. It’s a fact that when you don’t want to do something…and then someone you love persuades you to do it anyway…it can be the best thing you’ve ever done.
The weather was beautiful outside the woods – but inside, it was even better. So still you could almost hear the trees breathing.
The dog and her happy wandering.
And the walk home.
Once home there was a bonus. He cleaned my eaves troughs, clogged with the fall
leaves. I watched in trepidation as he navigated the roof and risked his life so my eaves troughs would be clean. And then we piled some wood, I thought wow, that’s love and family and devotion.
He fired up the kitchen and taught me how to make corn bread. mmm.
One of those perfect days.
Sounds like a perfect day. How do you make cornbread?
